How To Get Rid Of Acne Naturally At Home – “6 Scientifically Proven Remedies”

 

In my previous article, I introduced you to acne and how it is formed. And, you were able to learn some best 5 strategies to overcome them.

In this article, I am going to discuss some 6 scientifically proven remedies to naturally get rid of acne at home.

Even though acne is the most common skin condition experienced by people, getting rid of it could be the most devastating ever. And often times, people find themselves resorting to home remedies.

 

Get Rid Of Acne With This ‘6’ Home Remedies

These home remedies are things you can easily find in your kitchen and your local groceries stores.

1. Garlic

Among the many health benefits of this highly pungent vegetable garlic, its ability to help combat the common cold virus, reduce Garlic cloves for acnethe body’s cholesterol, and lower the blood pressure levels, are some few reasons why it has a special place in our hearts as well as our kitchens.

Also, studies have been done to prove its antimicrobial (Inhibits the growth of microorganisms) properties such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiparasitic.

Its antioxidant (prevents harmful chemical reactions in which oxygen is combined with other substances in the body, thereby causing damage to it) properties.

And, its anti-inflammatory (reduces inflammation like redness, sullenness, and pain) properties.

Those are all properties that are known to be effective against acne. (R1, R2)

Therefore, with the above been said, garlic may be effective in the treatment of acne. But you should definitely stay away from this remedy if allergic to garlic.

Garlic extract for Acne

  • Grate 3 cloves of garlic, and let it sit for a few minutes
  • Strain the juice, and dilute with an equal amount of water
  • Use a cotton pad to apply it on your cleansed face
  • Leave it on for 15 minutes, rinse face, and
  • Apply a moisturizer of your choice

Remember to do a patch test on the back of your palm to verify your skin sensitivity before using.

 

2. Onion

I initially discovered the effect of onion on acne from a personal experience/experiment. Onion for Acne

As I am a person who loves to make my hair treatments myself, I was trying out an onion juice recipe for hair growth, and thought, “why not spray some of this on my face which at that time was going through some active acne?”

Oh my God, the result was immediately prominent. I could feel my face become more soft and clear, and my moisturizer absorbed better.

The acne’s redness and sourness were relieved, although it didn’t clear the acne completely, I could see a visible difference.

It was with this astounding experience that I had to do my research about the effect of onion on acne. And yeah, I found it, I found in this study that onion and other herbs like Aloe Vera are effective against acne and acne scars because of their “antimicrobial and antifungal properties”.

Onion Juice Recipe for Acne

You can either extract the onion juice by the grating and straining method or chop the onions and boil, both methods are equally effective. Below was the method that I used. Note: this was initially meant for my hair!

  • Chop an onion bulb with two garlic cloves
  • Pour them in a saucepan
  • Add 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • Add 1/2 a cup of water
  • Bring to a boil, and let it cool after boiling
  • Strain the juice from the shaft.
  • Using a cotton pad,
  • Gently apply it on your face ( and/or neck, chest, back)
  • Leave it on for 20 minutes
  • Rinse off, and apply a moisturizer of your choice.

Take caution with your eyes as this mixture stinks badly.

 

3. Turmeric

This great spice has numerous health benefits on the human body. You could even call it the medicine for all ailments. Of Turmeric For Acnecourse excluding death. And these benefits have been backed with different scientific studies like this one.

Among many of its great benefits, here are the ones that could fight or prevent acne; antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant.

Turmeric Facial Mask for Acne

  • 1 tablespoon of turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon of honey or water
  • Mix together to make a paste
  • Apply on a cleansed face (and/or neck, chest, back)
  • Leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse off.

Or

  • After 10 minutes,
  • Soak a face cloth in a bearable hot water, not scalding hot
  • Squeeze out the water,
  • Place on your face for 5 minutes to steam it, and
  • Wipe off the mask with the cloth
  • Apply your favourite moisturizer for acne

 

4. Aloe Vera

In this scientific review, many benefits of Aloe Vera such as its healing, anti-ageing, anti-laxative, antiseptic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-acne etc., effects were proven. Aloe Vera for Acne

There are also studies which show that the addition of Aloe Vera to other anti-acne treatments improves the effectiveness of such treatments. (R2, R3)

Note that, Aloe Vera could be sensitizing to some people due to its component called “anthraquinone”–known to have antibacterial and antiviral properties.

In other to prevent reactions such as “stinging sensation, burning, and redness”, processed Aloe Vera which are usually free of anthraquinone should be preferably used.

In fact, processed Aloe Vera was found to be more effective against inflammation in this study.

Aloe Vera as a Facial Moisturizer

  • Using a processed Aloe Vera gel, apply topically on your face as a moisturizer, or
  • Use as a base in combination with other beneficial organic oils in a DIY (Do It Yourself) moisturizing cream e.g,
    • 7 tablespoons of Aloe Vera Gel
    • 2 tablespoons of Grapeseed oil
    • 2 tablespoons of Rosehip seed oil
    • 1 tablespoon of Sweet almond oil
    • 1 teaspoon of honey
    • 3 drops of frankincense/ tea tree/ or lavender essential oils
    • Mix together and store away
    • Apply topically as your daily facial moisturizer

Always remember to do a patch test before using any essential oil.

 

5. Honey

It is without a doubt that, honey is one of the many natural remedies whose uses are versatile. Honey for Acne

It is also effective against acne and acne scars due to its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antibacterial, and healing properties.

Honey as an Acne face mask

  • Apply honey on your cleansed face with your fingertips or mask brush
  • Leave it on as long as you want, then rinse off
  • Apply your moisturizer as usual

Or

  • Simply replace water with honey in all of your face masks to heal your acne and acne scars.

 

6. Green Tea

Green tea’s tendency to prevent cardiovascular (relating to the heart and blood vessels) diseases and its anticarcinogenic (tendency to inhibit cancer) properties are some of its various health effects that are beneficial to humans. Green Tea for Acne

Its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antilipogenic (tendency to inhibit fat production) properties, have also been proven to be effective against acne in this research.

Which brings me to say, If you haven’t incorporated green tea into your daily drink yet, it’s high time you included it. Remember you’ve got nothing to lose, other than gaining lots of its goodies.

Green Tea for Acne

Whether taken orally as a drink, or in a medication or used topically on the skin, there isn’t any hindrance to its overall benefit.

  • Start by having a cup of green tea a day, thereafter increase it to about 3 to 5 cups daily.
    • In a teacup, place a tea bag or 1 teaspoon of a loose tea
    • Boil water, and let it sit for a few minutes before adding to your tea bag
    • Pour the water into the teacup
    • Brew for 3 minutes or as directed on the manual
    • Strain the loose tea using a brewer, and
    • Enjoy your tea
  • Remove your green tea bag from your drink, and gently rub it on a cleansed face before bedtime, and leave it on your face overnight.
  • Use as a face mask for acne
    • 1 teaspoon of loose green tea
    • 1 tablespoon of honey
    • Mix together, and apply on a cleansed face
    • Rinse off after 15 minutes.
    • Apply a moisturizer containing green tea
  • Use skincare products containing green tea as one of their main ingredients

Important Fact From Experience: Do not use a boiling water to brew your tea to prevent it from being too strong or bitter as a beginner. But if you’re fine with bitter things or strong teas, you can go ahead with using the water immediately after boiling.

 

My Side Thoughts

Although all the above remedies have been proven through different scientific studies to be effective against acne, you should never forget that the brain behind science itself is human, which means “imperfection”.

As anything scientific is opened to a counter-argument, the effects of these remedies may also differ from individual to individuals.

Often times, the use of prescribed medication or supplements which are usually taken for longer periods of time have proved to be much more effective in getting rid of acne than home remedies.

Therefore, the next article would mainly focus on the most effective supplement reported from different reviews of its users, which I stumbled upon in the course of my research.
