Skincare is one of the most essential ways of achieving a healthy and well-nurtured skin.
But, to be able to utilize skincare in the best way, you have to know your skin type. That way, you could target your skincare towards it, thereby yielding a more positive result.
Now, ask yourself, “Do I know my skin type?” If your answer is yes, then congratulations, you’ve got a special connection with your skin.
But, if you answered NO!, Well, it’s okay, everyone at some point couldn’t figure out their skin type. It was only when they began to approach themselves with more love and care, did they figure it out.
So, it is time for you to also know your skin type.
Figure Out Your Skin Type
To figure out your skin type, you should follow this simple and easy steps;
#1. Cleanse Your Face
The first thing you want to do is cleanse your face off any makeup or debris, if not with makeup.
Then, leave your skin to breathe naturally without applying any moisturizer, treatment, or serum. That is, leave it bare as it is for the next hour or two without touching it at all.
If you are like me, and can’t resist touching, you could leave it overnight instead. You will just have to skip your nighttime routine except cleansing.
#2. Examine Your Skin
Immediately after getting up from the bed in the morning, before your skincare routine, look in the mirror to examine your face.
Does your whole face look very shiny, like you have just applied an excess oil on it?
Are your pores visible when you’re closer to the mirror, and even after taking a step back?
If yes, then you might be dealing with an Oily Skin Type.
Now let’s check if your skin looks dry, feels tight, pores aren’t visible?
And, do you see dry patches here and there while feeling the need to moisturize your face immediately?
Hmm… that lovely skin of yours must be a Dry Skin Type.
You are doing great so far. Do you think your skin does not belong to the above two categories? Yes!
Alright, got yah!
What do you see? Is it normal–that is supple, smooth, no excess oil, no dry patches, feels hydrated like you just completed your skincare routine and all the products have fully absorbed? Yes, that is it!
Oh beauty, what a great skin you’ve got there. And, I must Congratulate you for that, it’s a Normal Skin Type that so many beauties dream of having.
After examining your skin, do you think you fall in more than one of the above categories? If yes, don’t feel frustrated, it is absolutely fine.
You might have realized the centre zone or T- zone of your face that comprises your forehead, nose and chin, look shiny (or have the characteristics of the oily skin type above); And, the Outer zone of your face looks dry or just normal.
Dear friend, that is what is considered to be a Combination Skin Type.
Different Skin Types And Their Characteristics
Depending on how you see it, The skin is mostly categorized into either 3, 4, or even 5 types.
This is because ‘Normal and Combination’ skin types are sometimes categorized as one. In this case, the skin would be categorized into three types.
Whereas, some other time, sensitive skin is considered to be a type. Thereby, making the categories become five types if ‘normal skin type’ is considered different from ‘combination skin type’.
In this article, I would be going with the four typing categories.
With my extensive research and my own personal experience, I have realized all the above skin types could experience a sensitive skin condition even though it is most common and prominent with ‘Dry skin type’. This is due to several reasons that would be discussed in a later article.
Oily Skin Type:
A skin becomes an oily type when the sebaceous glands produce an excess amount of sebum than required for moisturizing.
- Often have a shiny appearance.
- More prone to acne
- Less prone to wrinkles
- Visibly large pores
Dry Skin Type:
A skin becomes dry when the sebaceous glands produce a lesser amount of sebum than what is required for natural moisturizing.
- Has a dull appearance
- May appears a bit flaky or chapped.
- Feels tight
- Feels itchy a bit
- It is less prone to acne
- Fine or no visible pores
Normal Skin Type:
A skin is considered normal when the sebaceous glands produce the required amount of oil/sebum need for natural moisturizing without being excessive nor less. This type of skin is known to be well-balanced in oil production.
- Feels smooth to the touch
- No shine, but rather
- looks well moisturized
- Much less prone to acne
- Acne and pigmentation heal faster
- Pores appear fine
Combination Skin Type:
A skin is said to be a ‘Combination skin type’ when it is categorized into more than one of the above three types. For example, your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) appears to be oily, whereas your C-zone (the outer portion of your face like the cheeks) may be dry or normal.
- Large pores in the oily T-zone, and fine or no visible pores in the outer part of the face.
- The T-zone appears shiny, but the C-zone appears dry or normal without excess oil
- The T-zone is more prone to acne than the C-zone
Factors That Can Influence Your Skin Type
Aside from Sebum production which plays an important and dominant role in skin characteristics and type, there are also many other factors that could influence and change them.
- Climate: When there is a change in location to a place with different climatic conditions than the skin is originally used to, your skin type may tend to experience fluctuations or even change.
- Age: Another factor that changes one skin type. People with oily or normal skin types during their teenage years could experience a change to normal or dry skin types as they get older. This is due to the fact that as we age, our skin’s ability to produce sebum is reduced.
- Skincare Products: This is one of the main reasons why knowing your skin type is very essential. Using a product that is not formulated for you could eventually change your skin type.
- Also, using products that are too harsh or packed with harsh chemicals that strip your skin of its natural oil in the process of combating excess sebum production could lead to an even drier skin type.
